Bios (a Red Root History)

Ruth Cocherell - Lead Vocals
My roots are in the East Bay. In the middle of grad school, the inability to see myself happy doing anything else with my life led me to go forward with my plans to get a band together, get signed, and record an album. My quest took me to the wind swept rooftop of a parking structure at UC Irvine where I met Scott who was practicing there with his band. Other members of Scott's band flew up to Oakland to work on the album at Bliss studios with Larry Klein until I met local guys Matt and Iestyn who joined up and finished up the majority of the recording. I got signed to an indie label in San Francisco, and thankfully got out of the contract less than a year later. In 2001, Red Root released our first album, engineered by Mango Labs and mixed and mastered at Prairie Sun in Cotatai. It is available at our shows and you will soon be able to purchase it through Amazon and Barnes and Noblel online, as well as MP3.com. As a bonus, San Francisco based 400 Blows Pictures produced and directed a music video for "Alexander" last summer and just finished up a live performance version shoot on March 29, 2001

Currently, I am working on writing and recording with Johnny Beane. We just finishing up a song for the Indie film Friends Call Me Mandy produced by 400 Blows Pictures. The single Joy will be released in December.

Oh ya, musical influences. Great Songwriters: Leonard Cohen, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Natalie Merchant.

Matt Romero - Drums
Main Projet: Percussion for IDK
Matt comes to us from the Bay Area through Chico State. Being in and out of bands as long as he can remember, Matt has had the opportunity to play with many musicians with a wide variety of styles. Most notably he was with GLUE. This Chico State threesome has been described as a true Rock band with a sprinkling of early punk melodies. While coming up through the ranks, Glue had the opportunity to rock the stage with such groups as Sublime, and the Mother Hips. Like a whirlwind they rocked through Chico before bursting onto the San Francisco scene with a vengeance, rocking crowds everywhere they played.

While on a Glue hiatus, Matt met Ruth one night at a coffee shop and they began to discuss their love for musical creation. Through a twist of fate, Ruth was in need of a studio drummer to finish her soon to be released debut album. Matt agreed to sit in on the sessions and play a couple of shows. Well time flies, and two years later he has become the solid drumming foundation that drives RedRoot. Matt's aggressive drumming style is all his own, but you can definitely hear influences from Dave Grohl (Nirvana), Neil Pert (RUSH), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Chad Sexton (311), and John Bohnam (Led Zeppelin) .

Scott Lee - Lead Guitar / Vocals
Main Projets: Optician & Lead Guitar for IDK
Growing up in South Central South Pasadena, my peers tried pressuring me into listening to Color Me Badd, Rico Suave, and Milli Vanilli. I quickly found salvation in rock music and the power of the electric guitar. Pretty soon, I was in college at UC Irvine playing Black Sabbath and Metallica tunes in my first band. Now on the straight and narrow, I've since moved on to songwriting with the influences of The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, Foo Fighters, and Radiohead.

  David Shih - Bass
Main Projet: Bass for my husband's band Sea of Sorrow
Red Root hopes to play with David in the future, but for now we are having to share him with Sea Of Sorrow. Check out his bio on SeaOfSorrow.net. This is one in-demand player.
